Hi, all! *waves* Welcome to my latest attempt at a blog. Rather than just writing about whatever comes into my head (which is a lot!) this blog is going to focus on one (big and fabulous and wonderful) topic dear to my heart: soap operas!
What is it about soaps that makes them so amazing? They are stories that never end (unless they are cancelled by horrible unfeeling network execs, although even then they can come back as the recent revitalization of One Life to Live and All My Children has proved). They are filled with drama! Passion! Characters who you grow to love and/or hate! Characters who become your family. I think Viki said it best in a speech upon the cancellation of Fraternity Row, the soap-within-a-soap on One Life to Live, which of course became a tribute to One Life to Live itself as it ended its run on ABC.
I first started watching soaps when I was home sick from school in elementary and middle school. I would switch back and forth between One Life to Live and Passions, which were cruelly scheduled against each other. When I was in college, I discovered the British soap opera Hollyoaks, which aired briefly on BBC America. When I raved about it to my best friend, she told me about how much she and her mom loved General Hospital. I started watching GH, and I was hooked. Before long, not only was I watching GH, I was making fan (music) videos and watching old clips on YouTube. Next came All My Children. GH was my true gateway drug. From there I started to absorb everything soaps.
Unfortunately, I was born a few decades too late. My discovery of the wonderful world of soaps came at the time that the genre was declining. First Guiding Light was cancelled, which I wasn't a big fan of, then As the World Turns, which I did watch occasionally. Then ABC cancelled All My Children and One Life to Live, and I was absolutely devastated.
I decided to start this blog now because things are really starting to look up again in soaps. One Life to Live and All My Children are being relaunched online. My beloved GH is on a creative upswing and just celebrated its 50th Anniversary. I want to celebrate soaps and share my thoughts on them with the world.
What can you expect to find here? Discussion on the soaps I watch (General Hospital, One Life to Live, All My Children, Hollyoaks, sometimes The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives), as well as the genre in general. Reaction to some casting news and maybe spoilers (which will be clearly marked). Maybe recaps of the shows, possible video blogs. Raving about my favorite couples and characters. Reviews of soap-related books I read. My fanmade videos.
So that's it for my introduction! I'll leave you with a video I made to celebrate 50 years of GH:
Until next time...
